S1:E4 "Heaven's Gate"

Season 1 Episode 4 of The Eldritch Estate is about the Heaven's Gate cult. Formed in the mid 1970s by Marshall Applewhite and Bonnie Nettles, the cult believed they could ascend to a higher level of human and led many members to follow them on their journey to "rejoin the extraterrestrials." The group culminated in a mass suicide event in 1997, coinciding with the appearance of the comet Hale-Bopp.
